How You Can Help to Find a Cure for Schizophrenia

There are a number of methods you can use to enrol in one or more of our research programs.

Use the on-line enrolment form below.

Contact the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank on 1800 639 295 or via email on asrb@schizophreniaresearch.org.au

Contact the ‘Using our Brains’ Brain Donor Program on (02) 9351 2410 or email on braindonors@schizophreniaresearch.org.au

Please consider enrolling to help more than one program, so that your investment in schizophrenia research achieves its maximum value for the future. The more diverse types of information we have about an individual, the more powerful the information becomes for research into schizophrenia. The cross-referencing of demographic, diagnostic and research data with family history, genetic and brain tissue data will greatly assist researchers to better understand the causes of schizophrenia.

Important Information Regarding Eligibility

Please note that the two programs have geographic and demographic limitations.

Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank

This program can only recruit volunteers from NSW, ACT, VIC, WA and QLD. In general we can only enrol people from capital/major cities in these states/territories and major centres outside the capital cities where there are clusters of volunteers.

This program is only recruiting people with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or healthy controls (with no personal or family history of mental illness).

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will be able to assess those in some of the more remote rural or regional areas at this stage, due to logistical difficulties and resource limitations. However, if you are ever travelling to Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne or Perth and would like to participate at this time, this can be arranged.

‘Using our Brains’ Brain Donor Program

This program can only enrol volunteers with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or healthy controls from the Sydney metropolitan area, the Hunter and Illawarra regions in NSW. All volunteers must also join the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank. Prospective donors will be asked to complete a Pre-screen to ensure that they are suitable for brain donation for research.

What will Happen After I Enrol?

Once you have enrolled, you will be contacted by a representative from the research program(s) you have volunteered to help. As each program is unique, the requirements of the relevant program(s) will then be discussed in detail and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

Whichever research program(s) you enrol in, you will be requested to participate in an informal interview with a qualified representative. Everyone will be asked to provide details of medical, psychiatric and personal history, as every aspect of your background affects how your brain functions. This information is vital for maximising the value of your contribution, because our research proceeds by comparing behavioural, anatomical, biological and genetic differences between groups of people to identify the particular differences which may underlie schizophrenia.
