Tissue Resource Centre Research Assistant

The Schizophrenia Research Institute’s (SRI) vision is to understand, better treat, prevent and cure schizophrenia. To support this aim SRI, together with the University of Sydney, coordinates the NSW Tissue Resource Centre (NSW TRC), a human postmortem brain bank that facilitates and supports neuroscience research into schizophrenia and allied disorders throughout Australia and overseas.

We are seeking a Research Assistant who will be responsible for facilitating the NSW TRC activities of relevance to schizophrenia and its allied disorders, including assisting with the ascertainment of cases, tissue dissection and handling (fixed and frozen tissue), liaising with research groups, preparation of samples for distribution, data entry, record keeping and implementation of quality control protocols. There will be opportunities to participate in research projects of relevance to schizophrenia for appropriately qualified candidates.

Essential criteria:

  • Appropriate qualifications (Honours level or equivalent experience);
  • Experience with handling pathology specimens (e.g. fresh and fixed tissues);
  • Experience in histology techniques and quality control;
  • The ability to work both independently and in a collaborative research team;
  • Excellent communication skills and well developed organisational skills;
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and management of laboratory inventory/equipment
  • Current driver’s licence.

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of neuroanatomy;
  • Neuroscience background;
  • Experience with biochemical or molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with electronic laboratory data systems
